Philip Plisson's photo report : The Emeraude in Ha Long Bay in Vietnam We discovered the existence of the Emeraude in an article written about this steamer in Air France Magazine. From now on, we believe that this is the most magical way to discover this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The captain, Mister Jacques-Yvon Le Fur, a former commander of the Brittany Ferries, shared with us unforgettable moments on board of this replica steamer designed to evoke the nostalgic charm of colonial Indochina. The history of Emeraude « In 1910, a paddle steamer called the Emeraude was offering unforgettable cruises in Ha Long Bay for visitors to what was then French Indochina. The Emeraude was part of a flottilla owned by the Roque family who had left Bordeaux in 1858 in search of adventure and fortune. Over a period of more than 50 years they found both. After several ups and downs including successful trading and timber business, near bankruptcy and being taken hosptage by pirates, the Roque brothers built Emeraude, Perle, Saphir, Rubis and Onyx to ferry passengers and freight along the waterways of Indochina and cruise on magnificent Ha Long Bay. » Source : www.emeraude-cruises.com To see all the photos please click on "slide-show" at the bottom of the page.
