The Bay of Arcachon in western France : photo report of Philip PlissonThe entrance gully of the Bay of Arcachon is located between the Dune of Pilat (or Pyla) in the south, and the Point of Cap Ferret in the north. Between those two points, vast sandbanks, among which the famous sandbank of Arguin, create narrow channels. The Dune of Pilat is the biggest sand formation in Europe. It is 2700 meters long and 105 meters high. The sandbank of Arguin measures 4 by 2 kilometres. Declared a nature reserve in 1972, it serves as a favourite place for many species of migrating birds as well as for numerous oyster beds. In the middle of the bay, the "Ile aux oiseaux" (bird island) shelters colonies of birds, oyster banks and the famous pile dwellings, called "cabanes tchanquées". The prints of panoramic views of the Bay of Arcachon are for sale in the store on line (select : Store on line/reproductions/ themes/ "new collection" or "sea & ocean").
