Photo report of Philip Plisson : Southern Coast of Kerala in IndiaLast winter, Philip Plisson traveled on the Asia coast in order to work on his book, the second part of La Mer (The Sea) : "La Mer, l'avenir de la terre" (The Sea, the future of the earth). After Cochin (see former report on Backwaters), Philip travels along Kerala southern coast and discovers the villages of Quilon (Kollam), Varkala, Kovalam and Vizhinjam (Vilimjam). The beaches of South are among the most beautiful ones in India. This part of the coast becomes touristic. However a lot of fishermen still live there, using fishing ancestral techniques. They use nets from the beach or on board of dugouts. By night, oil lamps on the crafst look like fireflies on Oman Sea. Some of the crafts are made with four wooden boards put together with rope, so that they can be dismantled and carried easily. In spite of the basic and fragile aspect of their craft, fishermen face the open sea...
