Philip Plisson's photo report : Ha Long Bay in Vietnam Ha Long Bay (or Along Bay) offers the wonderful sight of 200 islands and thousands of inlets and rocky pinnacles protuding up to 200m above se level. Ha Long Bay was inscribed on the World Heritage List, once for its outstanding natural beauty (1994) and also for its geological features (2000). Numerous legends surround this mystic place, of which mystery is maintained by a constant fog. "Ha Long" is literally translated as "the dragon descending in the sea". All the names of the site are evocative : the dragon's tail, the dragon's grotto... Fishermen are convinced that a monster is still living in the Bay and eats crafts... Ha Long Bay reveals a great biodiversity : mangrove swamp, coral, tropical forest, and numerous rare animal species such as this very strange marine anthropoda, considered as a living fossil, called Limule. This natural wonder is under threat from water and atmospheric pollution, due to the development of coal mining and shipping.
