Philip Plisson's Exhibition "Le peuple Vezo" (Vezo people) in our Gallery in Crac'h (Morbihan - South Brittany) from 8 July 2007In March 2007, Philip met nomadic fishermen in the south of Madagascar : Vezo people, who leave along the vast coral reef, a very special fishing area in the large and quiet lagoon. These people are free and leave in symbiosis with the marine world, considering that the sea is a source of life, subsistence fishing, and security. 4 months a year, Vezo used to sail to fish shoals with all their family. They were camping on the beach, sheltered by their sails tight on wooden poles. Today, Vezo are more sedentary and go on fishing daily, sailing in traditional outriggers. At low tide, children and women fish on the beach and gather sea cucumbers, in order to meet the demand of the asian market.
These people, named "Gipsy of the sea", are strong, proud, efficient and show a natural nobleness. It's only but smile, cheerfulness and unforgettable welcome. Great moments of iodized emotions, that Philip wishes to share with you through this exhibition composed with 42 large photos - original prints on canvas or on art paper - as well as a video screening. The exhibition takes place in the new area especially built in our gallery in Crac'h, on the road to La Trinité sur Mer (Morbihan, south of Brittany). The text is taken from the article "Cabotage en pays Vezo" (sailing in Vezo country) written by Patrick Blanche, photographer and author. Link to his website.
